Random walk is a scientific term to describe all the possible positions/steps a subject can take, used in various sciences. As random as this might sound, it’s the best possible term to describe the music RandomWalk is playing. You see, their stuff is not something you can describe easily, since it’s quite experimental and new. If I was asked to label this, I’d say it’s Gothic Metalcore and no, I haven’t heard something like this before…
I got into the band when I saw them live in Athens this July; with their weird image (costumes and make up) and interesting new sound they got my attention, so I decided a bit later to check their stuff. Surprisingly, they have the entire album available for free downloading (rapidshare and torrents) so if you like free stuff from the internet, go and check them now. If you’re into melodeath, avant-garde metal or you have an open mind for new stuff in general, you might find them interesting. At least I did, so I went on buying their album.
Redemption is their first album, released in February of 2008 and I got to say it’s a very good beginning. Even if the album cover seems to suck balls, the music is far more interesting. Oh, the printed version of the album art seems to be a lot better than the one I seem to find on-line. The music as I said before seems to be a mix of Gothic Metal and Metalcore, with mostly clean vocals and few screams. The atmosphere is something present at all songs (the awesome keyboards help a lot) and the vocals seem to assist in keeping it dark. The guitars and bass lines are really good too, with catchy and non repetitive riffs since most songs are about three minutes long.
Even if the album lasts only about half an hour, it’s very good, fresh and not boring at all. I can’t say you’re going to like all songs, but I didn’t notice any filler… The CD version also includes a music video, if you’re interested in buying it. To be honest, I don’t believe this can be a commercial success since it’s quite fresh and “weird” for the average metal fan, but I’m sure there are people out there who will appreciate this. Also, did I mention it’s free?
